Techno beats, dimmed lights and a crowded dance floor—were we in Club Karma in Seaside Heights, NJ? Not even close. This scene actually was much closer to home, in the 900 Room at Live Thursday last week. Rather than yet another singer-songwriter doing an acoustic set, Live Thursday featured a DJ, Chris Fezza ’10. This change in musical styles provided a refreshing shift. Fezza, who goes by DJ Fez, entertained the crowd for about an hour and a half with his beats and remixes.
Perched on a platform in the center of the room with his DJ equipment, Fezza began with house music then later highlighted his original remixes of favorite songs. These remixes demonstrated his skill as a DJ and enlivened the crowd. The audience especially enjoyed Fezza’s techno versions of Ke$ha’s “Tik Tock” and Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer.” The wide range of songs that he remixed appealed to many:
“Do you know what this is? Do you know what this is? It’s amazing- that’s what it is,” said Jordan Cole ’10.
A palpable excitement filled the air and, instead of the usual setup of tables, a large dance floor occupied the space in front of Fezza’s DJ platform. In some ways, the 900 Room seemed more like a Court party than a Live Thursday event! The amount of people dancing (an unusual occurrence at a Union event) astounded me. People recreated favorite dance moves from MTV’s “Jersey Shore” by “beating up the beat,” although, sadly, no one emulated Snooki’s famed back flips.
Lack of acrobatics aside, the only complaint that prevailed about Fezza’s performance was its brevity.
“[DJ Fez is] one of the underground DJ’s here on campus,” said Andy Gildersleeve ’10. “I’m glad he went public.”
Others appreciated the variety Fezza added. Seyi Ayorinde ’10 summed up the set and its large crowd: “[Fezza] put on a great Live Thursday [and brought] a lot of people that I haven’t seen at other [concerts],” Ayorinde said. “It’s very healthy for the Davidson community.” Fezza’s performance offered something fun and different and was enjoyed by everyone who attended.
