This Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lake Campus, the Davidson Crew team will be holding a regatta to benefit Habitat for Humanity. Teams will be attending from across the state, including Duke, Wake Forest, NC State, UNCW, and even College of Charleston.
There is no entrance fee for students or others wishing to watch the race, though the team entrance fees will go directly toward Habitat as donations. In addition, there will be baked goods sold during the event, as well as t-shirts sold all week in the Union.
Crew President Bekah Landfried ’10 said that after being approached about putting on a charity event, the Crew team decided on Habitat for Humanity as their recipient. She noted that since the project’s initial approval in December, earthquakes in Haiti and Chile reinforced the team’s decision.
“The cause has become increasingly important worldwide and locally,” she said.
Habitat for Humanity has a local chapter, Our Towns Habitat, as well as an on-campus chapter that regularly works on Habitat builds in the greater community.
“Obviously, we hope to raise as much money for Habitat as possible,” she said.
Landfried also noted the importance of increasing Davidson awareness of the crew team and their accomplishments.
“We’re those people that get up at five a.m.,” she said, hoping that the regatta will show what good the crew team does for Davidson and the larger Davidson community.
The ability to run such a large event will come from staff volunteers, but Landfried also noted the importance of a new dock built this year, after ATC gave the team a grant.
