This week’s Student Government Organization meeting was special in many ways. It was Meikaela Zwieryznski’s ’10 last meeting as President of the SGA, and it also had a special guest, President Tom Ross. Ross began his portion of the meeting by thanking Jordan Starck and his committee for the Dinner at Davidson event. This event took place on Saturday, Dec. 13, with plenty of participation from community members and members of the college. President Ross called it “one of the best nights I’ve had in Davidson.” He then continued on to congratulate Zwieryznski for her work during her year as president, particularly on her efforts regarding diversity issues on campus.
Ross continued on to speak about the Strategic Plan and explained some of the more immediate changes that will happen. One of these changes is the creation of two new dean positions, one who will be working on curriculum and the other on faculty development and student learning. There will also be a new course called “Living the Liberal Arts” that will be aimed at enhancing the first year experience and showing the importance of a liberal arts education. In addition to this, a new multi-cultural center will be created in the old PiKa house. The house will be renovated and this space will be available for student use. He also talked about plans to remodel the sophomore apartments during the summer of 2011. In addition to this, there will also be an expansion in interdisciplinary areas, such as environmental studies, and there is work being done in order to offer more interdisciplinary majors.
After Ross’ report, there was a discussion on the charter for the new acapella group on campus, the Nuances. There was a motion to vote and the charter passed. Zwieryznski then gave an update on the new student portal website that ITS is helping the SGA to create. The portal will continue to be developed in order to provide a service for students that is not currently available.
Then Supriya Wadhwa’13 and Paul DiFiore’13 took the floor to give a report on the Davidson 101 Survey that they sent out to the members of the freshman class. The survey’s results will be shared with the organizers of the Davidson 101 courses so that the feedback can be taken into account. In addition, the survey will be made available to the members of the class of 2014 after they take their Davidson 101 classes in order to continue improving the Davidson 101 program.
Afterwards, the current SGA Chancellor, Shamita Punjabi’12 thanked all of the SGA members for a wonderful year and the SGA members with perfect attendance were congratulated. Then, all SGA members applauded Zwieryznski’10 in order to recognize her hard work and effort throughout her year as president.
