This Thursday, Hannah Lyon ’10 will present her research on “Forgiveness, Reconciliation and Justice: Reformed Theological Ethics in South Africa and the U.S.”
Lyon’s discussion will grow out of research she has done both here at Davidson and abroad.
“This presentation is based off of my senior religion major thesis, which addressed the theme of reconciliation in two recent Reformed Church confessions (one from the 1960s US and the other from apartheid South Africa),” she said.
“The goal of the presentation is to take this research and to ask broader questions about the relationship between truth, forgiveness, reconciliation and justice - particularly in the US and South Africa,” she continued.
According to Carrie Mahoney, Program Assistant at the Vann Center for Ethics, some of these questions might include, “Are forgiveness and justice compatible? Can both be achieved through efforts at reconciliation, even with a prior history of great injustice? Does anyone have the right to forgive on behalf of someone else? What have Reformed churches in South Africa and the U.S. said about Christian obligations in this regard?”
Lyon travelled to South Africa last summer and will be returning to pursue graduate work in theological studies at Stellenbosch University in 2011.
The talk will take place in Room 302 of Alvarez College Union at 4:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
